A Note

Many handbell solo and ensemble pieces were published before the choreography notation was "standardized". As a result, sometimes it can be difficult to figure out what the published instructions really mean!

In an attempt to avoid this type of confusion, this site uses notational devices as outlined in

Handbell Notation, Difficulty Level System, Solo and Ensemble Notation,
published in 1999 by the AGEHR (Code No. R100)

and in the

Ringers Guide to Traveling Four-in-Hand Notation,
Companion to Nancy Hascall's Virtuoso Solo Series
published by Above the Line Publishing.

Recommended Additions to the Standard:

Since the interlocked method of 4iH taught by both Campanile and Christine Anderson is basically just a 6iH setup minus the outside bell, Michèle recommends adapting the 6iH notation for this setup. This notation would be useful whether you use Interlocked "Ring & Knock" 4iH, or Interlocked "Ring & Twist" 4iH.
