Michèle says:  This is one of my all-time favorite solos. While not technically difficult to play, the music gives you all sorts of opportunities for expression and nuance.

So, even though this piece could be played with no technique other than weaving, I use a combination of Traveling 4iH and finger damping to let me selectively LV, thereby giving me the most flexibility in how I phrase this beautiful music.

General Notes:

You will need 2 mallets for this piece, a soft one (for B4) and a hard one (for G#6).

This choreography uses the term "sloppy damp" - it means to let the bell ring a bit longer than note value. Let your ear be your guide as to how long to hold it.

Table setup:

Keyboard order, except preset B4 between D#5 & F#5 (note: the performance notes say to preset it between "E#5 & F#6", but this is a typo) and preset F#5\G#5 & E6\C#6 clusters.

Choreography:

m. 4: begin with the RH, "sloppy damp" the B4
m. 6: play F#5 & G#5 with the RH, releasing F#5 after playing. Do not damp the G#5 before playing the B5.
m. 7: sloppy damp the B5 before setting it down & switching G#5 rh-lh. Keep G#5 as a constant & pick up G#5/D#5 cluster.
m. 8: Letting G#5 ring, release E6 after playing it, keeping C#6 in hand as a constant.
m. 9: Damp G#5 on downbeat. Release D#6, keeping G#5 in hand as a constant. Create G#5/B5 cluster.
m. 10: Let C#6 ring through this measure. Do not damp B5.
m. 11: Damp C#6 on downbeat. Damp G#5 you play the B5.
m. 12: Release B5 after playing it.
m. 13: Create B5\C#6 cluster.
m. 14: Let C#6 & G#5 ring to the last possible moment. Set down the B5\C#6 cluster as a unit after ringing B5.
m. 15: Sloppy damp G#5 & set it down in F#5's home position.
m. 16: Return F#5 to home position.
m. 17: Create E5\C#6 cluster.
m. 18: Release E5 after playing it. After playing C#6, create D#6\C#6 cluster.
m. 19-35: As written, sloppy damping as your ear allows.
m. 36: Set G6 down in space above & between B6 & C7. Weave through this passage, paying attention to the legato line.
m. 38: Return G6 to its home position.
m. 39: Play D#6 & C#6 with the RH.
m. 40: Set B5 down in B4's home position. Since G#5 is already in the RH, there's no need to switch hands here.
m. 43-48: Do not switch hands on the B4. While letting B4 ring, play B5 with the LH, then immediately create B5\B4 cluster, picking up the soft mallet while playing B4 (m. 45). Return B5 to its home position in m. 48.
m. 49-70: Same as m. 5-27
m. 71-end: Keep B5 in hand as constant, let it ring while playing F#6. Create B5/G#6 cluster. Damp both the B5 & the F#6 on the downbeat of m. 74. Set down the F#6 & pick up the mallet for the final 2 measures.
